President Donald Trump’s approval rating just sank across the board in 8 different polls. As Libertarians, we should be mindful that work that we do to promote our current candidates – such as local superstars Kash Jackson for Governor and Claire Ball for Comptroller – are much more than that. Sure, the Libertarian Party of Illinois is on the verge of achieving major party status for the first time ever. Sure, we are about a week from making history for being the first third-party to be invited to an Illinois Governor’s Debate.
More than that – we are laying the groundwork for the 2020 presidential election.
Trump is tearing the Republican Party apart. Indeed, most elected Republican officials dislike Trump, but most won’t admit it publicly. This is why you usually only see GOP officials speak with honesty about Trump after they announce retirement.
Meanwhile, there’s no heir-apparent to Barack Obama on the Left so the Democrats may do something stupid like nominate Hillary Clinton again. Nobody knows whether Hillary would run again but this is something that she’s wanted all her life and she certainly is not going gentle into that good night.
If things continue to align, we will be poised to be the first serious challenge to the Democratic-Republican duopoly since Ross Perot in 1992.
It’s no secret that 2016 was a banner year for the Libertarian Party nationally. While some were disappointed more hadn’t been achieved, we nevertheless smashed party records. Think of the 2016 Presidential campaign as a practice run for better things and better candidates to come in 2020.
This is why – now more than ever – we need to double down and work twice as hard on the 2018 elections. If you haven’t already, volunteer or make a donation. Tell your friends about us. Like us on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter or Instagram. The foundation we build today will not be gone tomorrow.
Do whatever you can – no matter how little or small – to help achieve success in 2018. Because no matter how you look it, all roads lead to 2020.
Now, let’s roll!
